The MiG 21 – A Legacy in the Skies

On September 26, 2025, the Indian Air Force bid farewell to its legendary MiG 21 fighter jets after an illustrious 62 years of service. It protected the skies of India for over six decades. It was loud, fast and unforgiving. The MiG 21 commanded respect, turned heads and left its mark on every runway it graced. The iconic aircraft played a pivotal role in India’s defense, participating in significant conflicts such as the 1965 and 1971 Kargil wars and the Balakot air strikes.

The decommissioning ceremony took place at the Chandigarh Air Force Station, the very location where the MiG 21 was first inducted into IAF in 1963. The event featured a traditional water cannon salute, a tricolour flypast and an aerial salute, celebrating the MiG 21’s legacy.

This year’s Indian Air Force Day, celebrated on October 8 holds special significance. It marks not only the traditional celebrations of the IAF’s achievements but also the poignant farewell to the MiG 21. Even for our residents of JLPL Falcon View, some of whom have served in the Indian Air Force, this day is a blend of pride, nostalgia and reflection. It is not just the end of an era for the Indian Air Force but also a personal milestone for veterans who have witnessed the aircraft’s journey firsthand.

After 62 years of daring dogfights, the legendary fighter has taken its final bow. The retirement of the MiG 21 is more than just the end of an aircraft’s service, it is a chapter in India’s aviation history that has touched the lives of many. Even for our Air Force Veterans at Falcon View, this moment is a reminder of their contributions and the legacy they continue to uphold. As we approach Indian Air Force Day 2025, let us honour the past, celebrate the present and always look forward to the future of our country.
