A Tale Beneath the Surface – Mohali’s Groundwater Levels and Quality

A Tale Beneath the Surface – Mohali’s Groundwater Levels and Quality

Water – the most basic necessity of life, often taken for granted until it runs scarce or turns unfit to drink. Beneath our cities lies a silent story – one written in aquifers and underground veins – telling us more about urban health than skyline ever could.

NCR – A Region Thirsting Beneath Its Own Weight
NCR’s water crisis is not just about supply, it is about quality and sustainability. Over the years, unchecked urbanisation, industrial discharge and over extraction have taken a toll on the city’s groundwater.

The water table in several parts of NCR has dropped alarmingly – in some regions by more than 10 to 20 meters over the past two decades. The result? Borewells dig deeper, only to strike water that is increasingly high in nitrates, fluoride and metals. These contaminants, invisible to the eye, slowly find their way into taps and eventually into our bodies, affecting everything from bone health to digestion to overall immunity.

For many Delhi residents, investing in water purifiers has become less of a choice and more of a survival necessity. But even purification systems can only do so much when the root of the problem lies deep underground.

Mohali – A Refreshing Contrast
A few hundred kilometers away, Mohali paints a comparatively different picture. Blessed with better managed aquifers and relatively lower industrial contamination, Mohali’s groundwater level and quality still hold promise.

In most sectors, the water table remains more stable, thanks to controlled urban planning, open green pockets and close proximity to the shivalik hills foothills, a natural advantage that helps in groundwater recharge. The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and contaminant levels here are often within acceptable limits, ensuring cleaner tap water and healthier living.

It is not to say Mohali is immune to urban pressures – growing population and construction could shift the balance if Mohali is not careful. However, as of now Mohali stands as an example of what planned development can do for something as essential as water.

Beyond Purity – The Long Term Impact
Living in a city with compromised water quality is not just a lifestyle concern, it is a long term health and sustainability issue. Poor groundwater can silently contribute to chronic illnesses, raise dependency on bottled water and inflate the overall cost of living. More importantly, once groundwater is contaminated, it takes decades – if not longer – to heal.

The Final Word
We often evaluate a city by its roads, skyline or even nightlife. But perhaps the real measure lies in its purity of water that flows through its homes. For now, Mohali stands as a step ahead, not just in infrastructure, but in what truly sustains life clean, reliable water. Progress means little if what runs through our taps is not fit to drink.
